Pieter Bruegel the Elder
Peter Bruegel Old Flemish Renaissance painter, known for his landscapes and folk scenes. Considered simply one of the good masters of his time, he was later regarded as one of the greatest artists of the Northern Renaissance. His works are imbued with humanism and philosophy, going beyond the framework of everyday and landscape painting. Among the first to appreciate his genius were Peter Paul Rubens and the artist and art historian Karel van Mander. To the latter we owe little reliable information about the life of Bruegel the Elder.
